Dear Colleagues and Friends,

We are excited to invite you to the 16th Uppsala Conference on Electron Capture (ECD) and Transfer Dissociation (ETD) and related dissociation methods (UPPCON 2023). The conference will take place from August 20th to August 23rd, 2023, in Corvallis, Oregon, USA.

UPPCON was originally started by Professor Roman Zubarev in 2003 and has developed into the international meeting for alternative fragmentation techniques. Recently, electron fragmentation has become increasingly practical on commercial instruments, and new developments have made it competitive with CID even for doubly charged trypsin-sized peptides.

This year’s conference offers an exciting opportunity to discuss the latest developments in radical ion chemistry, methodology, and instrumentation, and to explore the challenges for biomolecule characterization. The conference is hosted by Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon, and by e-MSion (now part of Agilent).

The conference website is now open for registration and abstract submission, and we plan to select many of the submitted abstracts for talks. We have kept the registration fees low and have made accommodations available for students.

In light of the forthcoming event, we would like to share an adapted quote from Ryan Julian, which was used in the 2015 UPPCON meeting at UCLA:

In a world where collisions dominate the landscape…
And CID reigns as king…
A small group of scientists secretly rebelled by using electrons and radicals…
But when their experiments yielded results of tremendous value…
They decided to hold a conference and tell the world…
So help save the world from CID and sign up for UPPCON 2023!

Fragmentation techniques have improved greatly since and now CID and ECD can work hand-in-hand. UPPCON 2023 provides a venue for speakers from around the world to share their latest research insights. During the conference, you will have the chance to attend a variety of scientific presentations, including talks and a poster session. In addition, we have planned social activities each evening to visit the area and make new connections.

More information about the program is being added to the website as we finalize details and support.

We are excited to bring together a diverse group of researchers and scientists from around the world and hope that you will join us for this exciting event. So, don’t miss out on the opportunity to participate in UPPCON 2023 and contribute to the advancement of electron-based fragmentation techniques.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

Best regards,

Joe Beckman, Rachel Franklin, Valery Voinov, Yury Vasil’ev and Doug Barofsky
